Reading the Tesla App: Where Every Referral Number Lives

Almost every dispute about referral rewards is really a dispute about which screen someone was looking at. The app holds four separate numbers, they update at different times, and only one of them is authoritative for planning. Here is the map.

The pending benefit

After a referred order is placed, the referral appears as pending. Pending means recognised and not yet granted. Nothing is spendable in this state, and nothing should be, because every expiry clock in the programme starts at the Grant Date rather than at the order date. A referral that sits pending for weeks has lost you nothing at all — the countdown has not begun.

This is also the screen that produces the most unnecessary worry. Pending looks like the state a broken referral would be stuck in. It is not: a referral that failed does not pend, it simply never appears, because the benefit line was absent from the buyer's order summary at checkout.

The granted balance

When the transaction settles, the pending entry becomes a granted balance with a date attached. That date is the one to write down. Tesla Credits run 12 months from the Grant Date; a Supercharging distance allowance runs 6 months. Two clocks, same account, and conflating them is the most common factual error in referral writing.

The expiry warning

Tesla emails a 30-day warning before credits lapse. Filed with the rest of the mail it reads as a notification; it is the last reliable prompt before a balance stops existing. Credits cannot be reissued once expired, so there is no support conversation to have afterwards.

One mechanism moves the deadline, and it is not in the app: earning again. A further successful referral extends all credits in the account to 12 months from the newest Grant Date, so the whole balance moves rather than just the new portion.

The Loot Box

Redemption happens here, and two facts matter more than the balance. Redemptions are final — there is no return path on a redeemed item. And the perimeter is documented: credits cannot be converted to cash, transferred to another account, or used for gift cards or alcohol. Whether Tesla Shop merchandise is redeemable is genuinely disputed between otherwise reliable sources, which is why this desk will not assert either way. Which screen is authoritative

The granted balance, with its date. Everything else is either provisional (pending), a reminder (the email), or a catalogue (the Loot Box). What the buyer sees instead

Nothing in this article, and that is worth stating plainly because the two sides of the programme get mixed together constantly. A buyer's side is settled at checkout: the benefit either appears on the order summary before payment or it does not, and it cannot be added afterwards.
