The Referrer’s Side: What Makes a Referral Count, and What Voids It

Sharers assume they have work to do. They mostly don't — which is why the failures are so hard to see coming.

Most referral guidance is written for buyers, so people sharing a code assume there is a parallel set of obligations on their side. There is barely one. Almost everything that decides whether a referral counts happens in the buyer's browser, which is exactly what makes the failures invisible to the person who shared the link.

What the sharer actually controls

Two things. First, that the code or link they hand over is real and belongs to an account in good standing. Second, that they hand it over before the buyer starts configuring, because a referral cannot be applied after an order is placed — there is no retroactive route, and support cannot attach one later.

That is the whole list. There is no submission step, no claim form, and nothing to chase after the fact.

What the buyer controls

Everything else, and none of it is difficult:

  • Opening the link before configuring, in the browser they will actually order in.
  • Finishing the order in that session rather than wandering back in through a search result.
  • Checking the order summary before payment, which is the only place the benefit is ever visible.

The asymmetry is the point: a sharer can do everything right and still earn nothing, because the buyer opened three tabs and finished in the wrong one.

The four ways a referral fails

1. The link never attached. The buyer ordered from a session that carried no referral. Nothing appeared on the order summary; nothing can be recovered.

2. The car was not eligible. Model S and Model X left the programme in March 2026, and Cybertruck eligibility is trim-specific — Premium AWD and Cyberbeast are in, Dual Motor AWD is out. A perfect referral on an ineligible car pays nobody.

3. The annual cap was already met. Only the first 10 successful referrals per calendar year pay the referrer. Number eleven is a completed sale with no credit attached, and nothing in the flow warns either party.

4. The order did not complete. A grant follows a settled transaction, so a cancelled order leaves a pending referral with nothing to resolve against. The consolation is real: the cap counts successful referrals, so a cancellation has not consumed one of your ten.

What does not void a referral

Worth listing, because these are the fears people actually have. The buyer cancelling the FSD trial at the end of month three does not affect the referrer — the grant is already made and runs its own clock. Nor does the buyer changing colour or wheels on an existing order, or a delivery date slipping. And a referral is not voided by the two of you knowing each other, which is the entire mechanism, or by the code appearing publicly on a site like this one.

The desk’s read

The design puts the risk where the sharer cannot see it. If you want a referral to count, the highest-value thing you can do is not administrative but conversational: tell the buyer the two sentences that matter — open the link before configuring, and check the order summary before paying — and stop there. Sending someone a long explanation of the programme is how a referral gets lost, because a buyer mid-configuration will not read it.

And keep expectations calibrated on the reward. It is Tesla Credits rather than cash, non-transferable and non-reissuable, expiring 12 months from the Grant Date. The amount is quoted inconsistently in public reporting — $250 in some places, $500 in others — so treat the balance in your own app as the only figure that describes your account.
