What a referral code is worth today

“3 months of FSD or $400 off solar” — what the referral line means

If you searched for the sentence Get 3 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) or $400 off Solar Panel installation with my referral link, you probably saw it beside a Tesla referral link that an owner shared with you. It is a fair one-line summary of the US program, but it compresses four things worth knowing before you click:

• “Or” means one benefit per order, not both. A vehicle order gets the three-month FSD (Supervised) trial; a solar order gets US$400 off. They are separate referrals, so buying a car does not also discount a solar install, and the reverse is true too.
• The FSD half applies to Model 3, Model Y and eligible Cybertruck only. The sentence names no models, but Model S and Model X have carried no referral benefit since March 2026, and the Dual Motor AWD Cybertruck is excluded — see the eligible models below.
• “With my referral link” is literal. There is no code box at checkout. Open the link first, then configure; the benefit shows in the order summary before you pay and cannot be added afterwards.
• The sender gains too, and says so. The owner who shared the link earns $250 in Tesla Credits for a completed vehicle or solar order (capped at 10 a year). That costs you nothing, but it is why the link was sent.

Tesla's US referral page, as checked on October 4, 2026, listed exactly that pairing: three months of FSD (Supervised) for Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck, and US$400 off solar panels. The solar figure is the one in the table above; it is a US figure, which is why the Canada page treats solar separately.

Which models still qualify in 2026

Yes: Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck (Premium AWD and Cyberbeast). No: Model S and Model X, which were removed from the North America referral program in March 2026. If a page tells you an S or X buyer earns a referral perk, it is out of date — see the corrections.

How to use a Tesla referral code (3 steps)

There is no code box at checkout. The benefit is tied to opening the referral link before you configure, then confirming it in the order summary.

   Open the referral link first

   Before you configure anything, open a valid referral link (a ts.la/… address wraps an owner's code). This tags your session so the benefit is recognised.

   Configure and place your order

   Build your Model 3, Model Y or eligible Cybertruck and go to the order screen. The 3-month FSD (Supervised) benefit shows in the order summary before payment — there is no coupon box to type into.

   Confirm it applied, then pay

   Check the order summary lists the referral benefit before you submit. Tesla does not add a referral after an order is placed, so verify it is there first.

Code vs link — what's the difference?

They are the same thing in two shapes. A referral code is a short string tied to an owner's account. A referral link — tesla.com/referral/<code>, or a ts.la/<code> short link — is that same code wrapped in a URL, and opening it applies the code for you. Because Tesla has no field to type a code into, the link is the part that matters: the “Copy link” button copies the whole URL, and “Open at Tesla” opens it for your own country.

Is it really free? How we verify

Our method is boring on purpose. We confirm the code resolves to a live Tesla referral page for its owner, then check that Tesla's own Refer and Earn page still lists the FSD (Supervised) benefit for the eligible models. We stamp the date we checked (July 13, 2026) and refresh it whenever Tesla changes the program. The FSD trial costs nothing for its three months. The full dated status log

Every change we have logged to the North America referral program, newest first. Where Tesla did not publish an exact day, the entry states the month or period the change took effect. The front-page status board carries only the latest entries.

1. July 13, 2026 Verification

   Re-verified: reward and eligible models unchanged

   Re-checked the program against Tesla's own Refer and Earn page. The buyer reward (three months of FSD (Supervised)) and the list of eligible models are unchanged since the March update. Date stamped and carried through every page.

2. March 2026 Program change

   Model S and Model X removed from the North America program

   Tesla removed Model S and Model X from the North America referral program — an S or X buyer no longer earns a referral benefit; the previous $1,000 cash discount on those models is gone, not reduced. This is the single change most stale pages have missed.

3. March 2026 Program change

   Cybertruck referral benefit swapped from a $1,000 discount to the FSD trial

   In the same March 2026 update that removed S/X, the Cybertruck referral benefit changed shape: Premium AWD and Cyberbeast buyers lost the earlier $1,000 cash discount and now receive the three-month FSD (Supervised) trial instead — the same reward as Model 3 and Model Y. The Dual Motor AWD trim was not carried over and remains excluded.

4. March 2026 Program change

   Existing-owner loyalty discount cut from $1,000 to $500

   A related but separate benefit — the loyalty discount Tesla offers existing owners buying a new Model S, Model X or eligible Cybertruck — was halved from $1,000 to $500 in the same update. This is a loyalty perk, not the referral reward, and it is not paid to the person who shared the referral code; we log it here because several pages that discuss “Tesla referral discounts” conflate the two.

5. Early–mid 2026 Program change

   Buyer reward switched to a three-month FSD (Supervised) trial

   The buyer reward shifted to a three-month Full Self-Driving (Supervised) trial on eligible models, replacing the earlier cash-style discount that many pages still quote as “$500–$1,000 off.”
