What a referral code is worth to a US buyer today, in dollars, with the models that no longer qualify called out plainly.
For a US buyer, a Tesla referral code does one useful thing: it adds a three-month Full Self-Driving (Supervised) trial to an eligible order, worth roughly US$300. That is the whole benefit — no cash discount, no free Supercharging, and nothing for a Model S or X buyer since March 2026.
For the program-wide picture see the current status and the corrections; this page is the US-specific detail. Buying in Canada instead? Read the Canada edition.

Federal & state incentives you can stack (verify current)
A referral benefit is separate from any government EV incentive. The FSD trial is applied by Tesla at checkout; a federal or state EV credit or rebate is claimed under its own program with its own eligibility (income caps, price caps, assembly and battery-sourcing rules, and point-of-sale vs tax-time mechanics). Because these rules shift and depend on your state and the specific vehicle, we do not print a dollar figure here — confirm the current terms for your state and model before counting on them. What is safe to say: using a referral does not disqualify you from a government incentive, and vice versa.
The federal layer, as it actually stands
The caution above was written when there was a federal purchase credit to be cautious about. There is not one now, and saying so plainly is more useful than a hedge, because the hedge reads as though the credit is still there waiting to be checked.
Federal position for a US buyer. Compiled 1 September 2026 — confirm with the IRS or an adviser.
Item
Status
New clean vehicle credit (§30D, up to $7,500)
Expired for vehicles acquired after 30 September 2025.
Used clean vehicle credit (§25E, up to $4,000)
Expired on the same date.
Home charger credit (§30C)
Ran only to 30 June 2026.
Auto-loan interest deduction
Live for tax years 2025–2028, but income-gated — see below.
All three expiries came from the same legislation, on hard dates rather than phase-downs. Anyone who entered a binding purchase contract and made a payment before 30 September 2025 could still claim §30D when the vehicle was placed in service; for an order placed today that route is long closed.
The one federal item that is left, and its cliff
The auto-loan interest deduction is the remaining federal line, and it is easy to over-read because of its headline number. Three things determine whether it reaches you at all:
Income. It begins phasing out above $100,000 modified AGI for a single filer or $200,000 filing jointly, losing $200 of deduction per $1,000 above the threshold — so it is gone entirely at $150,000 or $250,000. A $50,000 band takes it from full to nothing.
The car. It must be a new passenger vehicle assembled in the United States.
The arithmetic. The $10,000 cap is a ceiling on interest paid, not a payout. Reaching it means paying $10,000 of interest in one year, and the benefit is then that figure times your marginal rate — not $10,000.
Which leaves state, municipal and utility programs as the largest remaining layer for most buyers, and those genuinely do vary by address — so we still decline to print a figure for them. That caution now applies to the part where it belongs, rather than standing in for a federal credit that no longer exists.
None of this touches the referral. Using one does not affect eligibility for anything above, and nothing above affects the referral. It remains the smallest item on the page and the only one with no income test, no address test and no assembly test.
How to apply at checkout
1
Open the referral link first
Before you configure anything, open a valid referral link (a ts.la/… address wraps an owner's code). This tags your session so the benefit is recognised.
2
Configure and place your order
Build your Model 3, Model Y or eligible Cybertruck and go to the order screen. The 3-month FSD (Supervised) benefit shows in the order summary before payment — there is no coupon box to type into.
3
Confirm it applied, then pay
Check the order summary lists the referral benefit before you submit. Tesla does not add a referral after an order is placed, so verify it is there first.
US-specific questions
Does a Tesla referral code work in every US state?
The referral benefit is applied at checkout wherever Tesla sells and delivers, so it is not state-restricted. State and federal EV incentives, however, vary by where you live and buy — check the current terms for your state.
Can I stack the referral FSD trial with the federal EV tax credit?
They are unrelated mechanisms: the referral gives an FSD (Supervised) trial at checkout, while any federal or state EV incentive is claimed separately under its own rules. Confirm current federal and state eligibility before you rely on either — these change frequently.
How much is the US referral benefit worth in dollars?
About US$300 — three months of FSD (Supervised) at roughly $99/month. Solar orders instead get US$400 off. We do not quote the old '$500-$1,000 discount' figures because they no longer match the program.
