Myth: the battery will need replacing within a few years
Fact: reported fleet data puts average capacity loss on long-range Model 3 and Model Y packs at roughly 15% by 200,000 miles — about 85% of original capacity retained. At typical annual mileage, most owners are nowhere near that figure within a normal ownership window.
Myth: frequent Supercharging wrecks the battery fast
Fact: reported comparisons between cars that Supercharge frequently and cars charged mainly at home show only a small difference in long-term degradation between the two groups — not the dramatic gap the "Supercharging is bad for your battery" myth implies.
Myth: cold weather permanently damages the battery
Fact: cold mainly affects your available range right now — the chemistry is temporarily less efficient in low temperatures — not the battery's permanent health. Heat exposure is the factor more consistently linked to lasting capacity loss.
Myth: you should charge to 100% every night to protect the battery
Fact: it depends on chemistry, and getting this backwards is the most common mistake. The LFP packs used in Standard-trim Model 3 and Model Y cars are the exception — they benefit from a full charge to 100% roughly once a week for calibration. The NCA/NMC packs in Long Range and Performance trims generally do better with a daily limit around 80%, saving 100% for longer trips.
Myth: dropping below the warranty's 70% figure means the battery is "dead"
Fact: 70% is the minimum capacity Tesla's Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty guarantees for a claim within its term — 8 years or 100,000 miles for Standard/RWD packs, 8 years or 120,000 miles for Long Range and Performance packs, whichever comes first. It's a warranty floor for a repair claim, not a cliff the battery falls off; reported fleet averages (about 85% retained at 200,000 miles) run comfortably above it for most owners.

Myth: a referral or loyalty program change affects your battery warranty
Fact: no connection at all. The Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty is a fixed manufacturer commitment tied to the vehicle, entirely separate from the referral program.
