Transferred Orders and Second-Hand Cars: Does the Referral Go With Them?

A referral attaches to an order and a benefit attaches to an account. Neither of those travels with a car.

Two adjacent questions arrive constantly: can a Tesla order be handed to someone else with its referral intact, and does a referral benefit follow a car that is sold on. The answers differ, and both follow from a single fact about where a referral actually lives.

Where a referral lives

A referral attaches to the order, through the link, at the moment the order is placed. The resulting benefit is then delivered to the account that holds the order. Neither of those is the car. That is the whole explanation for everything below.

Order transfers

If an order genuinely changes hands — a different buyer, a different account — then the order that carried the referral is not the order being completed. This desk will not assert a rule Tesla has not published, but the shape of the answer follows from the mechanism: the referral was attached to a specific order placed by a specific account, and a benefit is granted to that account.

The check that resolves it is the same one that resolves every eligibility question: whoever ends up completing the purchase should read their order summary before paying. If the benefit line is there, it applies to their order. If it is not, it was not carried across — and it cannot be added afterwards.

Second-hand cars

A registered car is outside the programme entirely. A private sale involves no Tesla order at all, so there is no referral to attach. Tesla-sold used stock is a used transaction rather than a new order, which is a different route from the one the programme is built around. Treat a referral as unavailable on a used purchase and be pleasantly surprised if a benefit line appears, rather than planning around one.

What the seller loses, and does not

An FSD trial is account-and-billing state rather than equipment, which since February 2026 is unambiguous in North America: there is no outright FSD purchase here any more, only a subscription. So a car sold mid-trial does not carry a trial to its new owner, and nothing about the referral adds to the car's resale proposition.

Credits are similarly immobile. They cannot be transferred to another person or account, cannot be reissued, and cannot be redeemed for cash — so a referrer selling their car keeps whatever balance they hold, subject to its own 12-month clock from the Grant Date.

The inventory and demonstrator middle ground

Inventory cars are new orders placed from a listing rather than a configurator, so the mechanism is the same and the risk is higher: inventory buying is fast, and it is easy to jump into a listing from a search result with no referral attached. If you intend to use a code on inventory stock, open the link before you start browsing. Demonstrator and service-loaner cars are sold as used or as demonstrators depending on market and history, which puts them closer to the used case than the new one.

The desk’s read

The programme is built around one event — a new order placed through a link — and everything that is not that event is either outside it or an open question. That is not a flaw; it is why the benefit can be granted automatically without paperwork. But it does mean the useful question is never "does the referral follow the car" (it does not) and always "whose new order is being placed, and does its summary show the benefit".
