Your First EV and Your First Referral: What the Benefit Covers

Written for someone with no EV frame of reference: charging, software, service, insurance — and where the referral actually lands.

If this is your first electric car, the referral programme arrives without context: a code someone sends you, a benefit described in initials, and no obvious way to tell what it does and does not cover. Here is the scope, in plain terms.

What it covers, in North America

Three months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) on an eligible new Model 3, Model Y or Cybertruck. FSD (Supervised) is a driver-assistance subscription that handles more of the driving than the standard Autopilot the car comes with — while still requiring you to supervise it and remain responsible. At the published $99 a month, three months is about $297 of value.

The important word is subscription. Since February 2026 there is no way to buy FSD outright in North America, so your referral benefit is a free trial of a recurring service — and it converts to a paid $99 monthly charge at the end of month three unless you cancel it.

What it does not cover

  • Charging. Not home electricity, not Supercharging, not a wall connector. Outside North America the referral benefit is charging distance, which is a frequent source of confusion when reading international advice — the reward depends on the market you order in.
  • The price of the car. The benefit is not a discount and does not reduce the purchase price, the amount financed, or the sales-tax base.
  • Service, warranty or repairs. Unrelated programmes entirely.
  • Insurance, registration, taxes or delivery fees. Untouched.
  • Premium Connectivity or the standard trial that comes with a new car. These are general Tesla offers that need no code, and presenting them as referral benefits is the most common way referral pages mislead people.

The one rule that decides whether you get it

Open the referral link before you configure, and check the order summary before you pay. A referral cannot be applied after the order is placed — not by you, not by support, not by the person who shared the code. Everything else on this site is optional reading; that sentence is not.

What it costs you

Nothing, ever. There is no signup, no account to create with a third party, and no payment step in a referral. Anything asking you for money in exchange for a referral code is not a referral service — cloned Tesla order pages bought through paid ads have solicited non-refundable deposits, and the defence is simply to read the domain in your address bar after any link redirects you. A genuine referral link lands you on tesla.com.

What the other person gets

Tesla Credits — an in-account balance, not cash — capped at their first 10 successful referrals in a calendar year and expiring 12 months from the date it is granted. Public reporting disagrees about the amount ($250 in some places, $500 in others), so this desk states the mechanism and leaves the figure to the referrer's own app. It costs you nothing and does not reduce your benefit.

Two words that cause most of the confusion

"Discount" and "free". The referral benefit is described as free, which is accurate — it costs the buyer nothing — and is then heard as a discount, which it is not. Nothing about it reduces the price of the car. If your budget planning has a line for it, move that line from "purchase price" to "software you did not have to buy in your first quarter of ownership".

The second word is "code". There is no coupon box at Tesla checkout to type it into: a referral link tags your ordering session, and the benefit appears as a line on the order summary. First-time buyers frequently reach the payment screen looking for a promo field, do not find one, and assume they have done something wrong. They have not — that field does not exist, and its absence is not evidence the referral failed.

The desk’s read

For a first-time EV buyer the referral benefit is a small, free, slightly administrative bonus: worth attaching in the forty seconds it takes, worth diarising the end date for, and not worth reorganising a purchase around. The costs that will actually shape your first year of ownership are electricity at home, insurance, and tyres — none of which a referral touches.
