A Dated Timeline of Every 2026 Tesla Referral Change

The referral programme changed more in the first eight months of 2026 than in the two years before it. Because most referral writing carries no dates, that churn is invisible to readers — a page from last spring reads exactly like a page from last week. So here is the log, in order, with what each entry did to a buyer's benefit.

14 February 2026 — the FSD purchase disappears in North America

Tesla removed the one-time Full Self-Driving purchase in North America, leaving a $99 monthly subscription. The referral benefit itself did not change that day, but its meaning did: three free months stopped being a sample of something purchasable and became a free trial of a recurring bill. It also became easy to price — three months at the published rate is about $297.

Late January 2026 — a second price tier appears

Slightly out of sequence but it belongs here: Tesla cut the FSD subscription to $49 a month for prior Enhanced Autopilot owners. That halves what an identical three-month trial is worth to that group, to roughly $147 — the single largest correction to the headline number, and one almost no referral page makes.

24 February 2026 — the terms are revised

The current Refer and Earn terms carry this revision date. A revision date is a boundary rather than a change in itself: every referral guide written before it is describing a rulebook that has since been rewritten. It is the reason this desk treats undated referral pages as unusable rather than merely old.

March 2026 — Model S and Model X are removed

The eligibility cliff, and the most consequential entry in the log. A referral link applied to a Model S or Model X order now pays nobody and gives the buyer nothing, and the ordering flow does not warn either party. Combined with the trim-level exclusion of Cybertruck Dual Motor AWD, the eligible list narrowed to Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck in Premium AWD and Cyberbeast trims.

April 2026 — Europe's reward doubles

The European referral benefit — Supercharging distance rather than a software trial — was doubled from roughly 1,000 km to 2,000 km. Two consequences worth recording: European referral pages written before April understate the reward by half, and the reward there still runs on the shorter of the programme's two clocks, expiring six months from the Grant Date against twelve for Tesla Credits.

22 May 2026 — Europe and the UK lose the FSD purchase too

The one-time purchase went in Europe and the UK, replaced by a €99 / £99 monthly subscription. Notably this did not convert the European referral benefit into an FSD trial: approval, not pricing, is the gate there. An EU-level discussion at the end of June 2026 was discussion-only, with the next window in October 2026 and EU-wide approval possibly slipping into 2027.

What did not change all year

The mechanics, which is why they are worth learning once. The benefit attaches at checkout and cannot be added afterwards. One referral applies per transaction, and a vehicle order and an energy order count separately. The referrer is paid in Tesla Credits — capped at the first 10 successful referrals per calendar year, expiring 12 months from the Grant Date, with a 30-day warning email before they lapse.

The referrer's credit amount is the one figure this desk will not state: public reporting says $250 in some places and $500 in others, and averaging two contested numbers produces a third that describes no account anywhere.
