Tesla Referral Link FAQ: Sharing, Expiry and Multiple Devices
Six questions specifically about the link — not the reward — answered as plainly as the evidence allows, with a clear line drawn where Tesla doesn't publish an answer.
Our site-wide FAQ covers the referral program broadly. These six questions are narrower, and come up often enough in our inbox to deserve their own page: they're all about the ts.la link itself, not the reward at the other end of it.
Does a Tesla referral link expire?
We haven't found Tesla publishing an expiration window for a referral link. Treat it as valid until you hear otherwise, but as a habit, open it close to when you actually intend to order rather than weeks in advance — that sidesteps the expiry question entirely and matches the "link right before you configure" sequencing this whole program depends on.
If I click two different people's links, which one counts?
We haven't found Tesla publishing what happens if you open one referral link, then later open a second, different one before ordering. The safest assumption, absent a published rule, is that whichever link you opened most recently — right before you configured — is the one tagging your session. If you mean to credit a specific person, open their link last, immediately before you build the car, rather than earlier in your research.
Does it matter if I'm logged into a Tesla Account already?
The referral tag attaches to your browser session when you click the link, separately from whether you're signed into a Tesla Account in that browser. We haven't seen Tesla document a case where being logged in changes how the tag behaves, so there's no reason to log out first or log in first specifically for the referral to work — just open the link before you configure, signed in or not.
Can I use my own referral link to buy a second Tesla for myself?
This is a program-eligibility question — whether self-referral is permitted, and under what conditions — rather than a question about how the link technically works. We haven't independently verified Tesla's current stance on self-referral, so check the terms on Tesla's own Refer and Earn page before assuming either way.
Does clicking the link cost me anything or commit me to buying?
No. Clicking a ts.la link just tags your session and takes you to Tesla's site — it doesn't charge you, reserve a car, or commit you to an order. You can click a link, browse, and leave without buying anything, with no consequence.
Can I get my own referral link if I don't own a Tesla yet?
No — a referral link is generated for existing owners inside the Tesla app, tied to their account and their vehicle or solar order. If you're the one about to buy, you're the recipient of someone else's link, not the source of one; our owner's walkthrough covers finding and sharing your own link once you do own one.
Several of the answers above are hedged on purpose — Tesla doesn't publish a rule for every edge case, and a referral page asserting one anyway is guessing. We'd rather say “we haven't found this documented” than invent a confident-sounding answer.
