The Tesla Referral Link, Explained (2026)
Most guides explain the code. This one is about the link itself — the ts.la address, what clicking it actually does, and where that habit can go wrong.
Our earlier post on code vs link answered the "are these the same thing" question in a few lines. This one goes slower on the link half specifically, because "just click the link first" is the one instruction every referral guide gives, and it's worth understanding what that click is actually doing.
What ts.la actually is
A Tesla referral link takes the shape ts.la/<code>. The ts.la domain is Tesla's own short-link address — the same one Tesla's app uses when you tap "share" on your referral code. It is not a generic marketing shortener and not something a referral site controls; every link with that domain is Tesla's own redirect, wrapping one owner's code.
What actually happens when you click it
Clicking a ts.la link sends your browser to Tesla, and along the way your session is tagged with the code in that link. That tag is what the order-summary line reads later, when you reach checkout — there's no separate step where you "enter" anything; the click did the entering. This is also why the instruction is always "open the link before you configure" rather than "at some point before you pay": the tag has to be sitting on the session before you start building the car, not applied retroactively.
Why a bookmark isn't the same as the link
Say you click a referral link today, then bookmark the resulting tesla.com page to finish your order next week. Is the tag still there when you come back through the bookmark instead of the link? We haven't found Tesla publishing how long a referral tag persists on a session, or whether it survives a saved bookmark, a closed tab, or a browser restart. Rather than guess, the safe habit is the one Tesla's own instructions imply: re-open the referral link itself, in the same sitting you plan to configure and order in, rather than trusting an old tab or a saved page to still carry the tag.
Sharing it by text, email or a QR code
The link works the same regardless of how it travels to you. A ts.la address pasted into a text message, an email, or encoded into a QR code someone hands you at a Tesla event all resolve to the identical redirect — the medium carrying the link doesn't change what the click does. What matters is the same thing every time: you have to be the one who taps or clicks it, in the browser you'll actually use to order, before you start configuring.
One device, or several?
If you open the link on your phone and then finish your order on a laptop, does the tag carry across devices? We haven't found this documented either, and it's a different question from the bookmark one above — it's about the device, not the elapsed time. Until we find a primary source that says otherwise, treat a device switch the same way we treat a long delay: open the referral link again, on the device and in the browser where you'll actually reach the order screen, rather than assuming a tag set on your phone travels to your laptop on its own.
Confirmed against Tesla's Refer and Earn page on July 13, 2026: a ts.la link is Tesla's own redirect that tags a session with the wrapped code, and the benefit shows in the order summary before payment. Session persistence across time or devices is not something Tesla documents publicly, so we don't assert a specific window.
The one rule underneath all of this
Every open question above collapses to the same practical answer: when in doubt, open the referral link again, right before you configure, in the browser you'll finish in. It costs nothing to re-click a link you've already used once, and it removes every variable this post just raised — elapsed time, device, browser, bookmark — in one step.
